University 8-Ball Championships

This weekend we are showing live coverage of the 2012 UPC BUCS 8-Ball Pool Championships from Great Yarmouth.

This event has featured on Cuesport TV for the last 3 years and has grown once again with over 450 players taking part this year.

At this moment in time the event will be on pay-per-view for the small price of just £2.99, if we manage to sign a last minute coverage sponsorship deal then we will try our best to make this a free event.

In the current business climate it is becoming more and more difficult to find sponsors and advertisers for what we do so we have to charge for the live events. If the University event happens to be on PPV then you can get a 50% discount by joining our mailing list (you will see a banner link to this on the right hand side of Cuesport TV.)

The coverage that we are showing starts on Friday morning at 10:00am (24th February) and concludes on Sunday 26th February at around 3:00pm. The first two days will conclude at around 7:00pm but please check the live event page or Facebook for updates.

If you are a Twitter user then you can follow us during this live event on the following account @cuesporttv we will be using hashtag #upcbucs2012.

Two New Live Events

The last live event that we broadcast on Cuesport TV goes back to the beginning of November last year with a GB9 event, but they are now back!

In February we now have two great live events for you on PPV.

The first is the English Blackball Pool Federation National Tour Finals from Club 147 in Leicester, this new event to our calendar features all of the qualifiers from the Regional Blackball Tours in 2011.

Some of the names featured will be former World and European Champion, Andy Lucas and National Singles winner, Adam Brown.

There will be live action from the Juniors and Seniors on the Saturday (18th February) and from the Ladies and Men’s event on the Sunday (19th February).

The action will only cost you £3.00 to view for the whole weekend and you can purchase on the link above.

Our second event of the month comes from the UPC BUCS 8-Ball Championships in Great Yarmouth. We have covered the University event now since 2009 and it is always a very entertaining weekend. The singles and team events get stronger and attract more new teams and players each year.

This year the action is live from Thursday 23rd February until Sunday 26th February and will cost just £3.00 for the whole event on the link above.

Please join us on these events your input is very welcome.

A Truly International Tour

In a statement posted yesterday, the IPA Tour, have confirmed that they have secured the sponsorship of the Hilton Worldwide chain of hotels to become the host venues for the 2012 season.

Whilst this is an excellent move there is still a lot of work to be done behind the scenes to secure the funding necessary to drive the tour forward. It is without doubt that the tour is in a transitional state and with the launch of the UK Pool Tour (started by the IPA’s former Chairman) that already has significant funding and backing a package needs to be put together sooner rather than later.

The one thing from the statement that I did pick up on though was the line quoted below,

We would like to advise that in 2012 the IPA TOUR will for the first time become a truly international tour by staging one of its events in Wales

Although Wales is officially a constituent Country of the United Kingdom it is hardly giving the tour some International flavour, many Welsh players have participated in the tour for a long time. If a tour such as the IPA wants to claim to be International in terms of the events then they have to leave the UK, France have a big Billard Anglais following and places like Belgium, Catalonia, Gibraltar and Malta also play a lot of 8-ball.

I am in no way knocking the efforts of the new tour committee as I understand the problems with trying to move events into other countries, and I also applaud them trying to change the geographic spread of the tournaments, hopefully in time many of the countries mentioned would have a genuine leg of the IPA Tour. Having Hilton as a sponsor may help towards this as they have hotels all over the world.

In the first instance though the tour need to announce their plans, entry fee’s, accommodation prices and prize funds for the tour next year so that players can make an informed choice over which series to participate in, and this is mainly a choice for the amateurs as it is them that make up the majority of the prize funds in the first place.

Does moving an event to Wales constitute a Truly International Tour?

The Cuesport TV 8 Ball Classic – First Details

For some time we have been looking into running an event or two specific to Cuesport TV that we have complete control over.

The first of these will be the Cuesport TV 8-ball Classic.

The event is penciled in for the 22nd/23rd October at the fantastic BreaknDish Pool Club in Street, Somerset.

It will feature eight top quality 8-ball pool players battling it out for a winner-take-all prize of £4000.00 (coming from the £500-per-man entry fee).

Every single match will be shown live online across the weekend with each being a best of 29 frame match, the final will be extended to best of 37 frames.

Once the 8 players are confirmed a live draw will take place on the Friday before the event (FA Cup style). This is to be as transparent as possible, in order to suit the venue some of the start times may be adjusted but the draw will remain the same.

So far we have had interest from the likes of Simon Ward, Rob Chilton, Craig Marsh, Tom Cousins and Oly Bale but it has to be made clear that none of these players have yet confirmed.

If you would be interested in taking part in this event then it will be first-some first-served so please send an email to Pete Williams on pete.williams (@) cuesport.tv or call 01305 826486.

Bale Organises Another Big Money 8-ball Match

Bridgwater based professional, Oly Bale, has organised another big-money challenge match that will be shown live on Cuesport TV (Pay-per-view).

The match, hosted by Yeovil Snooker Club, takes place on Saturday 4th June from 6pm.

Bale’s opponent on this occasion is Northern Ireland’s Ronan McCarthy. Like his match against Gareth Potts in the same venue in 2009 this race-to-21 frame match will be for a minimum 10k per man, with some reports suggesting it could be a lot higher.

You can watch all the action live for £3.49 if paid in advance or £4.99 on the day. Buy it here:

University Pool 2011

Off to Great Yarmouth again this month for the UPC BUCS 8-Ball Pool Championships.

Cuesport TV have covered this event for the last two years with recorded coverage, on both occasions the event was supposed be live but due to issues with the on site network this was not possible.

I will be trying everything possible this year to get this event some live coverage but if we can’t then the recorded videos will be made available as soon as possible after the event.

It is actually one of the better events for us as we have an unlimited supply of keen students wanting to get on the commentary mic, this however can be fraught with danger!

Last year we had a couple of students that got a bit ‘over-zealous’ with their use of the English language and a video file had to be taken down because of it. Hopefully nothing of this nature will occur this year!

If it is live then you can watch the action unfold from the 25th-27th February

A Lack of 8-ball

2010 has certainly been the year of 9-ball for Cuesport TV. In fact we have shown only four live 8-ball events all year, The European Masters, 2 money matches and a Legend’s Tour event. Plus we did provide recorded coverage of the University championships.

There are a number of reasons for this, firstly, there are now a number of different people offering different streaming services that are probably more aligned with the 8-ball games. Some of the smaller tours had there own streaming and of course the largest tour also does, The IPA.

Secondly, events on our calendar last year have been removed, the 8-Ball Super Tour being the most prevalent. Couple with this events that have clashed, we have been approached about a number of money matches which have unfortunately clashed with prior commitments, the Welsh Festival is also one of these events that has clashed.

In 2011 we are looking to make it much more balanced, we already have 18 live events in the calendar for next year and are hoping to add around another 10-15 events to this to make it our biggest year ever.

Money Match TV and the GB9 Ball Tour will continue, plus we have the EBA Masters and University Championships as potential events at this time.

Some of the balance will have to come from you guys, our viewers, if you know of an event, tournament, or money match that would be good for coverage then please let us know. We will try to fit as many events in as we can next year.

We are also looking in to the possibility of a doing a Money Match TV style event for 8-ball, whether this will be World Rules or Blackball is yet to be decided, and it could actually be a mixture so stay tuned for details on this should it come off.

One thing we have certainly lacked this year has been snooker, this is something we also want to address for 2011 and are looking into a number of possibilities.

Anyway, I know it is only November but roll on 2011.
