To be honest on paper I thought it was a foregone conclusion that Europe would romp away with this years Mosconi Cup. There are still three days to go of course but the USA dominated in last nights first session.
After taking the team match (a format I have to say I don’t like as it lacks fluidity and does not allow the players to settle) 6-4, they never really looked back and went into the last match of the evening with a 4-0 scoreline.
Ralf Souquet, ever the European stalwart, managed to claw one back for Europe in the final singles game of the night - he beat USA rookie Oscar Dominguez 6-5.
Play continues tonight at 7pm and Europe could do with a 3-2 or 4-1 scoreline in order to stay in contention.
One thing I did like about this years opening night was the addition of the Captain’s pick, instead of picking for their own team Alex Lely and Nick Varner had to select a player from the opposition side. I was very surprised to see Souquet selected by Varner and thought he may well have opted for Darren Appleton (Europe’s only Mosconi Cup rookie this year).
Along with many of you out there I am sure, I will be watching the Mosconi Cup which starts in about 6 minutes at time of typing. Each year I try to provide live updates and posts on the blog but I am going more interactive this year and am going to do live updates via my Twitter account.
@cuesporttv (Twitter link) I will be using the hash tag #mosconicup make sure you use it as well and see if we can get a bit of a buzz going online.
I want to hear from all of you either on this blog or via the Twitter account.
Oh and go Europe!
Great to see Darren Appleton get the spot he fully deserves for Team Europe plus USA have two exciting rookies in Dennis Hatch and Oscar Dominguez as well
With Mika Immonen playing some awesome pool in the final rack he potted Europe to Mosconi Cup victory and bagged himself the MVP in the process. Some memorable performances from Ralf Souquet, Niels Feijen who were unbeaten, laid the foundations for the second largest winning margin in Mosconi Cup history.
The European Team was made up of two reigning World Champions and the reigning US Open Champion and always looked too strong for the USA.
In fairness though the USA did not get the luck throughout the tournament, but take nothing away from the European team who potted the balls when they were presented.
All this hype about the Mosconi Cup got me thinking, has anyone posted any videos yet? So I thought I would have a look around the web and this is what I came up with.
Official Promo Video for Mosconi XV.
Some handheld work from the crowd in the arena!
So basically not much available at the moment from the 2008 version however there are a lot of videos from the previous editions. Once again last night Earl ‘The Pearl’ Strickland was at his controversial worst telling Mika Immonen he was ‘lucky’ after Mika beat him 5-0, he also proceeded to give ‘The Bird’ to a number of people in the audience.
Last year he had an issue with World 9-ball Champion Daryl Peach, some videos of this are below:

This shows the passion of the Mosconi Cup and why we all want to continue watching it! At CueSport TV we don’t have any Mosconi Cup videos but we do have some videos featuring Tony Drago and Mark Gray, both featuring in this years edition of the Mosconi Cup. I have listed some of them below:
It starts in about 1.5 hours! The most popular televised 9-ball tournament ijn the UK!
It is already available on Sky Sports in the UK however, you can also watch it live online thanks to the people at www.bet365.com - it does require you to register but other than that it is free!
Who will win? I am not a betting man but I feel Europe will win it for the second consecutive year. Tony Drago was awesome last time out and is on home soil this year. The only newbie is Mark Gray, former European number 1 it will be intresting to see how he fairs in the team environment.
Matches start at 7pm with the 5-player alternate shot team match, should be some fireworks and hopefully some great shot making as well.
