Blackball Shown Live

Well we have been showing Blackball pool live online now for the best part of three years, however, what happened at the weekend in Limoges, France was a first.

Blackball, that game we call English Pool, was broadcast live on Eurosport 2 (The World Championship to be precise). This is a channel with a reach of 120 million homes across 59 countries that packs awesome weight in the world of sports broadcast.

It was a good debut, Kozoom (who used to provide pictures of the Eurotour 9-ball events), were the production company and the set-up was faultless. It made a very good advert for a fringe sport that is almost dying out in England except for s few small pockets.

A broadcast like this could open all sorts of possibilities, giving the sport new focus and direction. TV brings sponsors, sponsors bring prize money and prize money brings big name players.

The one thing against a renaissance of Blackball in the long-term though is cost, I have heard to figure of €30,000 being touted for the two-day shoot. (In actual fact this was supposed to be for 6 broadcast hours but the organisers failed to fill the time slots.)

If the game is attractive enough, which I think it is, then sponsors would like to get involved, the WPA or EBA or whomever was involved should be using this footage to now grab new sponsors in a massively competitive market. There is scope for a World Tour as the game has a following in Europe and across Africa, and Australasia. Now is the time to push on.

On a side note, Scotland’s Jayson Shaw won the World Championships live on TV beating Sebastian Ramier of France in a fantastic display of pool and how the game should be played. Huge congratulations to Jayson, I know he is a fan of Cuesport TV and has featured numerous times on the channel over the last few years.

Could we be seeing more of the same?

Jayson Shaw Wins CueSport TV Event in Dublin

The CueSport TV £50,000 Pool Series returned over the weekend of 8th-10th May. 84 players from as far away as Catalunya, Spain competed to try and get their hands on the £3500 winners prize, or at least a share of the £10,000 guaranteed prize fund.

A lot of the usual suspects including Simon Ward, the winner of the first event in the Isle of Man, and Jayson Shaw made it through to Sunday unscathed after coming through the winner’s side.

One of the biggest stories of the weekend was that of Craig Marsh. Marsh, the runner-up in the Isle of Man, was beaten by England’s Andy Lucas in the final qualifying round. Lucas himself had come through three matches to qualify for Sunday’s knockout stages.

The last 16 contained some well-known names from the world of Blackball and it also contained the name Stephen Dempsey. Local-boy Dempsey is more well known for his World Rules play and it was actually his first ever tournament under Blackball rules. He ended up being the last Irishman standing and was beaten in the semi-final 10-8 by Jayson Shaw after leading 8-7.

The other semi-final pitted the only Englishman in the tournament, Andy Lucas, against another Scotsman, Paddy McMullen. McMullen is a very slow and deliberate player and takes his time over every shot, this lead to a very long match. Andy was leading throughout only for Paddy to peg him back; the match went 9-9 with Andy breaking. He prevailed and managed to book his spot in the final.

The final was a different matter as Jayson really ran away with it after Andy Lucas continually failed on his break. He had a run of 7 dry breaks during the final, which meant Jayson was able to lift the title and the £3500 prize after a 10-4 victory. Lucas settled for second and no doubt will be pleased with his performance after collecting £1500 for the runner-up spot.

The series continues in June with the English leg from Preston over the weekend of the 26th-28th June. Once again this will be live and exclusive to CueSport TV.

Majid’s Majestic Run Comes to an End!

Imran Majid has failed in his attempt to win all 6 of the Main Tour events on the GB 9-Ball Tour this year. After winning in Scarborough in July he had won all four of the title to date going into this weekends event in Manchester.

It was looking very good for Imran to lift yet another title as he reached another semi-final, this time against Darren Appleton.

Unfortunately for him Appleton was in fine form and sent Imran out – his first lost in a GB9 Main Tour event!

It was Appleton himself that went on to lift the title defeating reigning 9-ball World Champion Daryl Peach 11-7 in the final.

The Challenge Cup was won by Chris Robson, his second Challenge Cup win in a row and a player that looks almost certain for promotion to the Pro Cup next year.

In the Pro Cup we saw one of the best finals ever as new boy Jayson Shaw (a 19-year-old Scot) demolidhed the field with his fast and loose style. En route to the final he beat Imran Majid, Kevin Uzzell and Craig Osborne.

In the final he came up against European number 1 – Mark Gray, in a very fast final he eventually saw off Gray to pick up the trophy and winners cheque by an 11-8 scoreline.

All results are available on the official tour website: www.GB9BallTour.com
