Steve Davis put on a spirited display late yesterday evening to defeat Adrian Gunnell 5-4 and book a place in his second consecutive World Ranking 1/4 final – something he has not achieved since 1996.
Davis took a 3-0 lead only to be pegged back by a resurgent Gunnell at 3-3. Gunnell has looked very ordinary in the first three frames but showed some element of his class in making the scoreline level.
The conservative play displayed by Davis is what took him across the line and he seems to have found a new way of wearing opponents down allowing him to become victorious.
In the other matches in the last 16 yesterday, Judd Trump (given a bye into round two through Graeme Dott’s withdrawal through injury) put on a great performance against World Championship semi-finalist Joe Perry and won the match 5-2. In the battle of Scotland Higgins beat Hendry 5-2 and Ding Junhui won by the same scoreline against Michael Holt.
With the ‘Open Draw’ system being used it could be a very interesting tournament and every player will fancy their chances.
Today’s last 16 matches are:
- Jamie Cope v Peter Ebdon
- Marco Fu v Ronnie O’Sullivan
