An Excellent Advert for the Game

English Pool (the small ball game played in an large number of pubs in the UK) doesn’t exactly have the best reputation in the industry and has struggled to grow outside of the UK (there are small pockets elsewhere but not like 9-ball). In my opinion over the last 10-15 years this has been caused in part by the in-fighting amongst the organisers and the fact that there are two governing bodies playing slightly different rules.

This weekend (6th – 7th Sept) we did a live broadcast from the Oracle Super Tour in Leicester. It was massively refreshing to see players from both rule sets playing in a tournament with a decent amount of priz money. Throughout the weekend there was no bickering or sneering about who plays what rules just simply getting on with the action and putting on a performance.

To give you the information, the tournament was being played to WEPF World Rules and had a first prize of £3400.00. The tournament featured former and current world champions and someone called Tony Drago!

I don’t want to go into much detail about the actual tournament because that can be found elsewhere online, what I want to talk about is the quality of some of the matches.

Four matches spring to mind and three of them involved Chris Melling (who it has to be said was flying all weekend!).

The first was Mellings match against Neil Toms, the first frame was utter dross and lasted 26 minutes but then the next 10 frames only took the same amount of time with Melling in particular playing some awesome stuff. The next match featured Mick Hill and Craig Marsh and for me was the pick of the day, I haven’t actually looked through the tapes yet but there must have been 9 or 10 break & runs by either player with Marshy eventually winning 8-7. One of the best adverts for the game of 8-ball pool in my opinion.

Why I suggest it’s a good advert for the game is due to the fact that we recieve viewers from 110 countries and this weekend was no exception with 1300 viewers tuning in to watch the Oracle Super Tour live. If 8-ball pool in is country is going to develop internationall then it is the example set by these players (including the semi-final and final in my list) that will reach the masses. It was almost all out attack and that is ultimately what viewers want to watch and the tactical, defensive shots that were played were also of the highest order.

Since I have owned CueSport TV this is probably the best days pool we have had on the channel and further gives me drive to push both the channel and the game forward.

Thoughts from GB9

Just getting back into the swing of things from the GB9 Tour this weekend. It was another great event with some very high quality pool being played.

We caught up with Lee Rigby and Shirley Ang (Tournament Directors) and finally got a 10 minute interview wi Imran Majid – the UK number 1. You will realise from my previous post that Imran lost the chance to win the Grand Slam when he was defeated by Daz Appleton in the semi-final – I think he will bounce straight back from this and will be a major threat for the next tournament.

Biggest performance of the weekend goes to 19-year-old Jayson Shaw who won the Pro Cup division by beating Mark Gray 11-7 in the final – a final that finished around 00:30

This meant a two hour drive back to my parents in the Midlands – we are trying to concentrate on quality and not quantity from tournaments in future which is why last weekend we concentrated solely on the Pro Division – it also means matches will become available sooner which is better for everyone.

The GB9 Tour is the best national tour in Europe and I had a few discussions with some key individuals this weekend that may well see massive changes in the future (not next year before we get too excited!!)

Editing work to do now so will finish up with the latest news later!

A 9-ball Match of Epic Proportions

Back in October 2007 when CueSport TV had not even officially launched we went off to Bilston, West Midlands to record a £10,000 per-man 9-ball challenge match between two of the UK’s most decorated pool players.

The players in question were Darren Appleton and Tommy Donlon.

Due to problems with software and then with tape corruption this match was only recently completed. It is a match of epic proportions with both players battling with both the conditions and their own stamina throughout. The edited version, which is now available on pay-per-view, lasts 3 hours and 12 minutes from start to finish. We have created the programme in such a way that it means you get no TV adverts but can still move from section-to-section as you please.

So how much does it cost to watch this epic match?

Just £4.00 (Eur5.00, $8.00) – this single price gives you full access for 365 days so you can come back to sections or the entire match whenever you want.

To purchase the match you need to login to CueSport TV in the usual manner (left side panel). Once you are logged in click on Login again and the drop-down menu appears with the Appleton v Donlon match in it. Then just follow the instructions to checkout with PayPal.
