Europe to win in Las Vegas Showdown?

Yes folks it is the return of the Mosconi Cup again this weekend and Team Europe fly out to the USA to try and defend the trophy they won on home soil last year.

Again the European team consists of two British players in Darren Appleton and Mosconi rookie Chris Melling. Appleton has once again had a stellar year culminating with his defence of the US Open title.

Melling has also produced some superb pool this season and won his first major when lifting the China Open title. Melling, for those that have not seen him before, has the most amazing cue action ever! He is a twice WEPF World 8-ball Champion and has also competed on snooker’s main professional tour. He certainly has the pedigree to compete on this level.

Incidentally both of the Brits are from that ‘Cuesporting Mecca’ called Yorkshire and have been friends off the table for some years.

These two ‘heavyweights’ of the pool shooting world are joined by the unbreakable Ralf Souquet of Germany, a member of last years victorious European team, Nick van den Berg of Holland, also part of that winning team in 2010 on his return to the Mosconi Cup and finally Niels Fiejen, also of Holland, making a Mosconi Cup return after missing out in 2010.

The team is also captained by Dutchman Johan Ruijsink for the second time in succession thus giving, in my opinion, the European Team the upper hand and some invaluable continuity.

Team USA will be skippered for the first time by Mosconi Cup veteran Charlie Williams, his team is made up of the ever-impressive Johnny Archer, the very exciting Rodney Morris, probably the best money player in the world, Shane van Boening, Shawn Putnam and debutant Mike Dechaine.

With the number of high level titles won this season the European Team looks much more likely to lift the trophy for the second time in succession, however, the last time the event was held on US soil it was the Americans that did the business with that man Shane van Boening potting the winning 9-ball.

My opinion (and that of Mosconi Cup player Karl Boyes) is Europe to win!

Set & Ready

Well GB9′s last event of 2011 started nearly 2 hours ago with the preliminary rounds in the Challenge Cup.

This will be joined by the first round of the Pro event later.

The tour continues to innovate and this time every one of the 16 tables have a laptop to input pigeons results that then pushes data straight put onto the web. There are also auto functions like calling the next matches automatically and ref’s being called to a table at the touch of a button.

It will be interesting to see how it goes down with the playing contingent and if there are any teething problems.

The live coverage from us starts tomorrow at 10.15am after we completed mortal of the setup this afternoon.

Two Upcoming Live Events

The end of November is our next foray into live web streams for your pleasure.

The first is on the 19th/20th November and is live coverage from the last leg of 2011 GB9 Ball Tour, the event is named the British Grand Prix but will still take place in Daventry.

There is a whisper that the GB9 Main event first prize will increase to £2000.00 next year but nothing as yet has been confirmed. This event though will be fierce as players like Jayson Shaw, Imran Majid, Daryl Peach, Craig Osborne and Chris Melling are all still in with a shout of gaining the coveted top spot on the rankings.

The GB9 Ball Tour pays out £500 bonus to the number 1 ranked player at the end of the year and a further £250 bonus to the player ranked number 2.

Our second event in November is the return of the Welsh 8-Ball Festival to your screens, we first covered this event back in 2009 but missed it last year due to prior commitments.

It will be great to be back as this really is a fantastic event held at Trecco Bay Holiday Park. There will be around 200 players converging on the venue across the five days and Cuesport TV will be on hand to cover the last 3 days. This will mean coverage from the Men’s and Women’s singles, the team event and the Junior finals.

A Quiet Couple of Weeks

After the hectic last few weeks with Cuesport TV out and about on our travels to different live events, there are now at least two weekends without any live coverage.

Return to Form

It is a sad state of affairs that our 8-ball coverage has been somewhat lacking over these last 18 months. But with the European Blackball Championships now complete we have a return to form this weekend with edition 15 of Money Match TV.

The event promises once again to be full of highlights, pressure, tension and of course some good quality pool. The match that needs a mention out of the three televised matches is the headline game. Mike Gibney finally plays Craig Dixon in a £2000.00 challenge. These two have wanted this game for a while but until now had not been able to arrange the details. Well now it is on we can all just get on and watch it, it will be tasty!

If you get in quick (like right now!) you can get access to the live stream for only £1.99 – that is 3 matches and about 9 hours worth of pool for less than the price of a pint!

If you enjoyed our coverage from the European Blackball Championships then until the videos are released (looking likely this will start to happen week beginning 3rd October 2011) then you can check out some great photos from the event taken by myself and James during the event.
