Ryan Day in Live Action Tonight

I am back at the TCC Pro-am Snooker this evening with World Number 6 Ryan Day in action.

This week is one of the most exciting of the qualifying rounds with two other professionals competing. Matthew Stevens, who like Day is seeded into round 2, and Daniel Wells who will play in the first round.

Stevens and Day will start their own matches at around 9:15pm after the conclusion of the first round matches.

Tonights draw is below:

Round 1:

Daniel Wells v Jerry Connors
Andrew Pagett v Anthony Davies

Round 2:

Ryan Day v Wells or Connors
Matthew Stevens v Pagett or Davies

Main action starts at 7:30pm and once again is exclusively live to Cuesport TV Subscription holders.

Snooker Is Obviously Popular

Since we have been covering the TCC Snooker Pro-am from Newport each week we have seen a 5% growth in our viewers accessing our video on demand categories.

Some elements of the media suggest that snooker is dying and there is no doubt that it has undergone a decline since it’s heydey in the 1980′s, both in terms of playing numbers and TV audiences.

What these media types forget though is that for the decline in the UK there has been major growth in places like Germany, Belgium, Russia, The Middle East and China.

Although 60% of our website traffic still comes from the UK we are finding more and more of it is driven to access snooker related content. Viewers from all over the globe want to get a regular fix of high quality snooker videos. I would suggest (without any evidence I must add) that this could be due to the fragmentation of pool disciplines. It is easier to search and find snooker content as it is it’s own discipline, pool on the other hand comes in many forms and is a little trickier to find.

I have always said that the growth of Cuesport TV will come about by good quality snooker content and this is what we are finding.

I am hoping to announce another major tournament being added to our live offering over the next week so look out for that.

The Trials of Video Production

Last night saw the first of seven weekly transmissions from the TCC Snooker Pro-am. An event that has been running for 10 years at the Tredegar Cons. Club in Newport, Wales.

This years event has attracted Shaun Murphy, Mark Williams, Matthew Stevens and Ryan Day plus a host of other professionals and top level amateurs.

For us it was our second move into live snooker streaming, and obviously it is key with the move to subscriptions imminent, that we provide a good show. From my own point of view I think yesterday went well, the number of live viewers was small but this was due in part to the event being advertised as a paid event. I think the viewers that did watch probably would have paid anyway.

The key ingredient to the success was the mounting of a ceiling camera to give the typical full table shot we see on the BBC and Eurosport. This was quite comical really, we had brackets designed specifically for the job, however, the camera then would not tilt so all we could see was the light rig – a nice light rig, but not quite what people wanted to see.

Rather than actually start drilling into the ceiling of the TCC we made use of the suspended ceiling and using a plank borrowed from my son’s old bed set about creating a mount for the camera, it paid off and gave us the desired result. Although I was sweating it a bit with the camera precariously over the second table, secure though I must add!

The club is quite small and with 80 spectators crammed in we didn’t think there was going to be space for two cameras, but we did manage to add a second angle through the use of a tripod. The natural lighting in the club was perfect and a great nights entertainment was had.

Streaming at 450kbps is a first for us as we are normally stuck with small standard connections but the stream was smooth with no buffering and very little delay thanks to Virgin Media for that one!

Anyway you can watch the videos for yourself later on this weekend over at Cuesport TV and feel free to make a comment or two.

We will be providing live coverage again next week as well so stay tuned.

HD Streaming Trial for TCC Pro-am

The TCC Snooker Pro-am which features the likes of Mark Williams, Shaun Murphy, Ricky Walden and Ryan Day will be streamed live on Cuesport TV starting on June 25th.

The tournament that is played in a social club with two snooker tables will have matches being played concurrently, due to space restrictions and bandwidth on site it is only possible to stream from one table.

However, as the other matches will also be of interest to our viewers we will be recording the second table for later broadcast.

What is going to be exciting about this is that it means for the first time we will be able to test HD recording and subsequently streaming. It will mean that the HD footage will only be able to be watched at around 3.5meg but the quality should be excellent.

Both the live stream and the HD recordings will only be available as part of the Cuesport TV Subscription which is due to launch iminently. It has already been delayed by two days due to solving some issues with the payment processing company.

HD is always something we have wanted to try but due to bandwidth issues and time constraints in the past it has thus far not been possible, this could be the future of Internet streaming as more and more companies are now trialing it. The BBC i-player now features HD versions of their programmes and cycle team Cervelo now stream HD content over at Bartape.net.

Top 5 Snooker News Resources on the Web

Obviously being in the industry I like to keep up on the latest news from the world of snooker, so it got me thinking, what are the top 5 resources for keeping up-to-date with snooker news?

Of course there is no scientific approach to this and is based on my opinion alone but I am sure some of you will enjoy the links. You may also want to send me your own list and I can update it over time based on your own opinions.

Number 5: BBC Snooker - A very easy to read website with some great information and also video highlights (although may not be available outside the UK). My reason for only putting it at number 5 on my list is because the website only seems to cover the major events. Even more prevalent, obviously, are the BBC televised events.

Number 4: Sporting Lifethe snooker pages on the Sporting Life website are comprehensive and results are updated in a timely fashion, the reason I have not rated it higher is because the site seems to be full of betting website adverts. Ok, maybe I am being a little touchy as snooker and betting do go hand in hand, but I am after the news not the odds!

Number 3: World SnookerA good looking and functional site since the revamp and has some great news articles that are of course exclusive, would probably rank higher if they could sort out the live scoring.

Number 2: Snooker Scene Blog - It was difficult to decide between the top two (I will explain why in the next position) and although not an out-and-out news resource Dave Hendon’s Blog is one of the best snooker resources on the web that has a very good following. In the Snooker Scene veign it often does not pack any punches either!

Number 1: Global Snooker CentreI love Dave Hendon’s blog, but, the reason I decided this was the number 1 snooker news resource on the web is because this website does not solely concentrate on professional snooker. All snooker events that they can gain information on are covered. There are a lot of things I don’t like about the site (mainly that it needs a bit of modernisation) but you cannot detract from the quality of the information they provide.

So Global Snooker Centre takes it, and I don’t think anyone would argue! However, if you feel I have missed something or would rank the sites in a different order then please let me know.

Back-to-Back 147 Snooker Breaks!

Whilst playing in an exhibition in front of 600 spectators in Ireland Jimmy White and Ronnie O’Sullivan both compiled maximum 147 breaks in consecutive frames.

First up was Ronnie O’Sullivan who racked up his break with the crowd chanting his name and then came the turn of the Whirlwind, whose break only came about becuase Ronnie had hogged the table and wanted some of the other lads to play, they didn’t get a chance as Jimmy himself bagged a maximum break.

Snooker Sceney – Refreshing?

Whilst scouring the web, as usual, for interesting snooker related material I came across a new blog. There a lot of blogs out there and many fail to capture my attention for more than a fleeting glimpse, this one however is totally gripping.

It is very refreshing to see a comical approach to covering the game of snooker and in Snooker Sceney, that is certainly what you get. Below is a link to a post from this blog which I just sat and laughed my head off at.

Bear in mind is was written before the start of this seasons Masters tournament.

Another Century Break

Back in September we covered our first snooker event the 2008 Belgium Open. A host of top players were in attendance including Mark Selby. Recently I posted a 147 attempt he made in the first frame of the tournament against Kasra Kharavan. Well in that match he went 209 points without reply as he made back-to-back centuries.

The 104 in the first frame was backed up with a 105 in the second.

You can watch this break below:

Neither of these two were actually the tournaments highest break, Neil Robertson made a 142 in his first group match. I will bring you this break later.
